Nine questions. Your answers stay in your browser until you ask for the written version.

Here is what the nine questions get at

  • Question 1 decides whether you own your own website address, and most people have never thought to ask it.
  • Question 3 is why some businesses pay twice for the same site, from zero, with nothing carried over.
  • Question 4 is the single most common reason a build stalls for three months at eighty percent done.
  • Question 5 exposes why "unlimited revisions" is not generous, it just means the limit has not been told to you.
  • Question 6 is where the cheapest quote quietly becomes the expensive one by about month eight.
  • Question 8 is a recurring bill wearing a friendly face, and it is almost never in the quote.

Why this exists

Most website money is lost before a line of code is written

It goes at the moment of paying a deposit to somebody who has not yet said, in writing, what they are building, whose name it goes in, and what happens if they stop answering. By the time any of that becomes a problem the money is gone and the leverage with it.

Then the replies slow down. Then they stop. Maybe a site eventually arrives. It looks acceptable on a laptop, the menu will not close on a phone, the prices cannot be changed without calling somebody, and the hosting sits on an account under an email address nobody has.

This is not a rare outcome. And if you are hiring from a distance, it is worse. You cannot drop by the office, whoever is checking on progress for you does not know what to ask, and a deposit sent across borders is very hard to get back.

Reading about it changes nothing. Asking nine specific questions, and knowing which answers should worry you, changes the outcome entirely. That is all this is.

What you walk away with

  • A number you can act on tonight, rather than a vague unease about a quote you cannot read.
  • Nine questions you can send in a single WhatsApp message, none of which require you to understand code.
  • A way to hold a developer to account from anywhere, without relying on somebody to stop by their office.
  • The wording for each one, so the answers arrive in writing instead of in a phone call you cannot refer back to.
  • A way to compare two quotes on something other than the number at the bottom.
  • A screenshot you can send your business partner, or whoever is keeping an eye on the build for you, that explains, in one image, why you want to wait a week.

The nine, in order

01Whose name the domain goes in
02Who holds the hosting account
03What happens to the code if you leave
04Who writes the words, and is it in the price
05How many rounds of changes are included
06What costs begin after launch, and when
07What happens if the launch date is missed
08Whether you can edit the site yourself
09Whether you see the real site before launch

The scorecard

Score the quote in front of you

Nine questions, three answers each, about four minutes. Answer for whoever is quoting you right now. If you have not asked them yet, answer as though you have not, because that is the real position.

The Web Design Deposit Scorecard
Question 1 of 9
Question 01

Whose name will the domain be registered in?

The highest-stakes answer on the list, and the one almost nobody asks. If the domain sits in their name, your web address is theirs, and getting it back becomes a negotiation.

Nobody sees this but you

The written version

Why give this away? Because the businesses that ask these questions are better clients for everybody, including the designers who answer them well. Around half the people who read it will hire somebody else, and that is fine. The ones who come back come back already knowing what they are buying.
The only deadline here is your own. Once the deposit has been transferred, seven of these nine questions get much harder to ask.

Where should it go?

The written breakdown lands in your inbox in a few minutes.

Step 1: score your quote first ↑. The breakdown is built from your answers.

Name and email. That is the whole form.

1EMAILNO SEQUENCE

The One Email Promise

Your breakdown arrives in one email. There is no five-part sequence behind it, no daily follow-up, and nothing is sold to you in the meantime. If you want to hear from me again you will have to ask, and if you never do, you still keep everything above.

What good looks like

A quote that would score 18 out of 18

Nothing fancy. Each line answers one of the nine questions before you have to ask it. The wording is an example, not a template you must copy.

Website quote18 / 18
  1. Domain registered in the client's name. The client holds the registrar login.Question 1
  2. Hosting account opened in the client's name, on the client's own email address.Question 2
  3. If either side ends the project, all work completed to date transfers to the client.Question 3
  4. Client supplies page text and photos by the agreed date. We write the homepage headline.Question 4
  5. Two rounds of changes per page are included. Further rounds are charged at a fixed, stated price.Question 5
  6. After launch: domain renewal yearly, hosting monthly, maintenance optional. Every amount listed.Question 6
  7. Launch on the agreed date. If we miss it by more than two weeks, part of the balance is waived.Question 7
  8. A handover walkthrough, so you can change prices, text and phone numbers yourself.Question 8
  9. A private staging link you can open on your own phone before anything goes live.Question 9

If the quote in front of you reads nothing like this, that is not proof of a bad designer. It is a list of things to ask for, in writing, before the deposit.

How it works

From first message to a website you own

  1. 1

    Free consultation

Tell me about the business and what the website needs to do. I'll recommend a package, or tell you if you do not need one.

  2. 2

    Written specification and quote

Pages, features, content, launch date and every running cost, in writing. It answers all nine scorecard questions before you pay a deposit.

  3. 3

    Accounts in your name

The domain and hosting are set up in your name, on your email, before the build starts.

  4. 4

Design and build, on a staging link

You watch it come together on a private link you can open on your own phone, with the agreed rounds of changes.

  5. 5

    Launch and handover

The site goes live, you get every login and file, and a walkthrough so you can make everyday changes yourself.

  6. 6

    Post-launch support

30 days of technical support (60 on Growth). Anything that does not match the specification is fixed before final acceptance.

Question 1, checked now

Whose account is your domain in?

Type the web address you have, or the one your designer registered for you. This looks up the public registration record. Nothing you type is stored.

The quote scanner

Paste the quote. See what it says, and what it leaves out.

Copy the text of the quote or proposal you were sent and paste it below. The check runs in your browser: the text is never uploaded or stored.

Straight answers

Is this a disguised sales pitch?

The scorecard runs without an email address and gives you the full result on the page. The written version costs one email and arrives once. If you want a website built afterwards, the prices are published openly rather than quoted on a call, which is the opposite of how a pitch works.

I have already paid a deposit. Is it useless to me?

No. Questions 1, 2, 6 and 8 are worth asking at any stage, and the earlier in a build you ask them the easier they are to fix. Question 1 in particular is worth checking tonight regardless of how far along you are.

My developer is a friend or a relative. Does this still apply?

It applies more. The projects that go worst are usually the ones where nobody wanted to seem distrustful by asking, and the relationship takes the damage alongside the money.

My developer is in another city or country. Does this still work?

Yes, and it matters more. Every question on the list matters more at a distance: you cannot turn up at the developer's office, a relative checking in rarely knows what to ask, and money sent internationally is hard to recover. Everything here works over WhatsApp and email, and the answers arrive in writing, which is the only kind you can hold anybody to from another time zone.

What if my developer answers all nine well?

Then you have found a good one and the scorecard has done its job. Get the answers into the written agreement rather than the chat thread and go ahead.

Do my answers get sent anywhere?

Not unless you ask for the written version. The scoring happens in your own browser.

Free consultation

Tell me about the website you need

A short form, a personal reply by email, and a written recommendation. No obligation, and no sales sequence: you hear from me about this, and nothing else.

  • A recommended package, or an honest "you do not need one"
  • A written quote that scores 18 out of 18
  • Domain, hosting and files in your name

Your details are used only to reply to you. Never sold or shared.

P.S. The expensive mistake is almost never hiring the wrong designer. It is paying before anybody has written down what is being built, who owns it, and what happens if it goes quiet. Four minutes now settles all three. Score the quote, then decide.

P.P.S. If you do only one thing from this page, ask question one. Whose name is the domain going in. The answer takes ten seconds to give and it is the hardest thing on the list to undo once the money has moved.
